PRECURSOR OF ANTICHRIST

No one took the pleasures of gnostic libertinism further than Marcus (c. mid-second century CE). Once a devotee of the Valentinian school, Marcus had a vision that would forever change his life when the “infinitely exalted Tetrad descended upon him from the invisible and indescribable places in the form of a woman . . . and expounded to him alone its own nature, and the origin of all things, which it had never before revealed to anyone.”38 Such a vision would not have been uncommon for a pupil studying under Valentinus; in fact, all Valentinians were expected to receive a revelation from the “living One,” Jesus Christ.39 Driven by this epiphany and also knowledgeable in ars magica pharmaka, Marcus eventually formed his own church, an institute equal parts Greek philosophy, pagan entheogenism, and sex magic.40 Marcus’s school differed from others like those of Simon and Carpocrates. In the former schools, members engaged in sexual spiritual rites within the group. On the other hand, Marcus’s students were expected to find people outside the group to enchant with their charm, wit, and psychedelic Eucharists.41 They would hit up local pubs and bathhouses seeking women and men to participate in their sexual-spiritual rites. Marcus had essentially appropriated Christianity into a cult of swingers and pickup artists.

It drove the church fathers crazy!*59

I am prone to believing that this gnostic troublemaker, Marcus, delighted in that.
